As you are probably aware, UDE is expanding the definition of a ‘Crime Lord’ for their upcoming Vs. System expanasion. This will allow Captain America and Iron Man villains such as the Red Skull and HYDRA to make an appearance in the game without having to go through the trouble of creating a new team affiliation.
This is great news for Crime Lords fans, since it promises to create some very interesting team-up possibilities. More importantly, it will allow one of my favorite internaional villains to make his first appearance in the VS. System.
Sacre Bleu! It’s Batroc ze Leaper!
Georges Batroc is an expert tactician, gymnast, and athlete. He had spent countless years working for the French Foreign Legion before ultimately turning to a life of crime. There he has made a name for himself as the colorful Leaper, often pitting himself against the likes of Captain America, Spider-Man and Squirrel Girl. In every instance he has been defeated, but Batroc continues to make a living as a private mercenary, working for orgnizations such as HYDRA and the Masters of Evil.
He may look silly, but Batroc is a master of the French martial art of savate. He has been shown to hold his own against Captain America and Hawkeye on numerous occasions, and also proved to be a formidable foe against Batman during the JLA/Avengers crossover.
At various points throughout the years Batroc has formed what is known as “Batroc’s Brigade,” a group of supervillains consisting of characters such as Whirlwind and Swordsman. Each of these groups are short-lived, but it has served to cement Batroc’s reputation as one of Captain America’s greatest foes.
Batroc has a strong sense of honor, and over the years has shown a great deal of compassion and respect for his arch-nemesis. During one memorable Captain America bemoaned the fact that so few of his foes ever seem to give up their villainous ways. Batroc was moved by this statement, and temporarily gave up his life of crime. Recently it appears that he has given up crime entirely, registering as a member of The Initiative during Marvel’s Civil War.
Another memorable thing about Batroc is his ridiculous (and mildly offensive) French accent. Though he is a French native, he clearly does not have a mastery over the language. His adult daughter, who is also a villain known as ‘The Leaper,’ does not appear to have these same difficulties.
In creating a card based on Batroc it’s important to remember that he is NOT a joke — he was created by Jack Kirby and Stan Lee for crying out loud! He is a very respectable combatant, but one who may be a little more… eccentric than he should be. If and when he appears in VS., hopefully his card will reflect that.
