HL: Clone Saga Preview

August 30, 2008

This Wednesday we’re going to be practicing the new Silver Age Clone Saga format at our Fullerton Hobby League. Although we will not be playing for the Marque Event prizes yet, it should still be a lot of fun.

Bonus points for the player who brings the most unique Clone Saga deck. If anyone does Spider-Man I’ll probably just curl up into a little ball and cry.

Proud Zinco Podcast #4!

August 29, 2008

Ludin and Paul have just posted the fourth episode of their excellent VS. podcast, ‘A Proud Zinco Podcast.’ It’s definitely worth checking out.

The best part is when Ludin describes our Fullerton Hobby League as a ‘Magical Unicorn.’ If that doesn’t make you want to listen to the show then I’m not sure what will. Great job guys.

Hungover League Update

August 28, 2008

Very little VS. was played. Very, very many adult beverages were consumed.

I don’t think Drunken Hobby League is going to be the next great format, but it seemed like everyone had a good time. Many apologies to Andrew for being the worst Beer Pong partner ever.

Clone Wars

August 26, 2008

In case you missed it, the new Hobby League Marquee Event has been announced:

Marquee Event: Vs. System Silver Age “Clone Saga” Tournament
This marquee event is the first ever VS System Silver Age Clone Saga event. For this event, players may build any deck legal in Silver age. During the game, the uniqueness rule does not apply to characters when recruiting or substituting.

Goodbye uniqueness, hello Mega Legend decks! There are a dozen or so characters who have three or more spots on the curve in Silver Age, and just about any one of them are a force to be reckoned with when uniqueness is taken out of the equation. Hulk, Superman, Batman, Spider-Man, Darkseid, Captain America and Doom immediately come to mind, but it’s the stuff I’m not expecting that really worries me.

I applaud UDE for throwing caution to the wind this time around — Perhaps now might be the time for my long awaited Luke Cage/Iron Fist ‘Sweet Crisis!’ deck.

Giant-Sized Drinking

August 25, 2008

I, Galactus, Devourer of Worlds, invite you to join us this Wednesday for a night of cosmic alcohol consumption. We will abandon our local Hobby League this week, and instead meet at Omar’s apartment in Fullerton.

  • Whenever a character you control leaves play, take a drink.
  • Lose a planet, your side drinks.
  • For each planet Galactus consumes, he drinks.
  • Annoying VS. terminology such as ‘Legal,’ ‘Pass,’ and ‘Declare’ are required… otherwise

All are welcome. Bring good booze. So says Galactus!

HL Report: Wheelchair Abuse!

August 25, 2008

As I mentioned earlier this week, we took on the strange and annoying Triple Legends format at our Hobby League. However, I did forget to include one very important rule: These decks MUST be multi-team, i.e., at least one of your Legends must not share a team affiliation with any other Legend. Whoops!*

Omar brought a Cap/Iron Man/Spider-Man deck that was vaguely similar to one that Carlos had posted on his awesome site, while Ludin threw together a Human Torch/Punisher/Cap build that had to be seen to be believed. My initial plan was to play my normal Illuminati deck, but that wasn’t kosher with our group.

After some complaints I felt obligated to at least try and put something new together. With almost none of my cards at my disposal I ended up building… another Illuminati deck. But this one was totally different, I swear!

Triple Legends: HL 8/20

August 20, 2008

Our minds were collectively blown at Hobby League when Ludin suggested that we each build Triple Legend decks for this week. Of course, after playing Ambush Bug VS. we figured that nothing was too crazy for us.

Can you build a 60 card deck with three different characters receiving the full Legend treatment? I’m probably going to be lazy and give Illuminati deck a spin, but I can’t wait to see what everyone else has planned!

Bumblebee + Dawn Granger + Emerald Eye for the win!

Jeepers Creepers

August 18, 2008

Today was a big week for classic Teen Titans supervillain, Dr. Arthur Light:

The Creepiest Supervillain in Comics!

Without giving too much away, let’s just say that Dr. Light won’t be terrorizing Wonder Girl with evil disco balls anytime soon.  Honestly I’m glad it happened, but what will become of the DC Universe (and all of comics) during the interim between his death and subsequent resurrection?! Comic books need a scumbag and they need one NOW.

Fortunately for us there is no shortage of monsters waiting in the wings! Who will be able to claim Dr. Light’s throne as the creepiest supervillain in comic books?

Mega Weekend LV..?

August 14, 2008

Last night at Coffee Cake League the subject of organized tournaments came up again. We have invested pretty heavily in MUN, but since the set was released there hasn’t been any major tournaments on the West Coast. GenCon is going to be a lot of fun for those who can attend, but sadly I’m stuck working all weekend.

Due to OP-God Erick living in Orange County most of the events end up being held there, but what if we tried moving things elsewhere? It is my understanding that Las Vegas has a large VS. scene, and the drive is only a couple hours away…

Would you seriously consider attending a Mega Weekend (or Mini-Mega Weekend) if it were in Las Vegas? I mean, the city is a thousand times cooler than Indianapolis. Plus, they have tigers and pirates!

Your thoughts?

Ambush Bug Format!

August 11, 2008

With a small Hobby League things can get old pretty quickly, especially if nobody bothers to build any new decks. Format changes help, although I find that all of us seem to alternate between the same handful of teams/themes over and over again.

In response I have created the greatest format of them all…

Ambush Bug VS!

Break out your six-sided dice, kids! You’re in for the ride of your life!
